The European Parliament is working to fend off the growing, global threats against media freedom and the pressures and intimidation that independent journalists face daily.

  • facilitates exchanges between policy makers and media,
  • promotes legislation strengthening media, and
  • shares experience and best practices by organising workshops to build capacity, bilateral meetings between journalists and with Members of the European Parliament, and tailor-made conferences for media representatives.
Topics covered by these events include the role of the media in political debate, media ownership, transparency and regulation, dealing with fake news and disinformation, civil society as a source of information and a support for political reform, individual freedoms, privacy, encryption, social media tracking, defamation law, and ensuring the protection of journalists and whistle-blowers.
